SCOTLAND'S LARGEST INDEPENDENT firm of chartered accountants, Johnston Carmichael, believes in a dynamic workplace in which employees can thrive. Founded in 1936, the firm today has 10 offices from the Highlands to the Central Belt, with a mix of rural and city practices and more than 450 employees. In our survey, staff say they find their work stimulating, with a 71% positive score. They say their managers are supportive (75%) and feel proud to work for the organisation (74%). The company offers expertise across the accountancy disciplines to private business and individuals, which ensures opportunities for development. Technical and soft skills are assessed by referencing career maps, which lay out the firm's requirements of staff at every level. Each appraisal is read by representatives from the human resources and training and development teams, so support can be given on an individual level to the reviewer as well as the employee concerned. All training is tracked to ensure it is delivered to the satisfaction of each party. The firm has spent almost £3.5m annually on development, averaging out at £7,500 on each staff member. People feel the training they receive is of great benefit to them (69%) and agree that their jobs are good for personal growth (75%). Development isn't the only way staff are being looked after. Employees are offered discounted gym memberships, there is an inter-office football tournament and people are sponsored to play golf and run marathons. Staff also make the most of the great Scottish outdoors through local office hillwalking days. People can work flexitime and take flexi leave, and employees are able to renegotiate working hours. Staff are happy with the balance between their work and home life (70%) and say they have not suffered stress in the past year (77%). Workers get 50% off independent financial advice from the organisation's subsidiary, Johnston Carmichael Financial Services, and can save money through a discount scheme. www.jcca.co.uk

My work is an important part of my life
Sometimes the simple ideas which have stood the test of time are the best, so the company place great emphasis on their appraisal process. Appraisals take place twice in the year, and focus not only on an assessment of performance and areas for development, but also on engagement and career potential. Technical and soft skills are assessed by reference to 'Career Maps' - freely available documents which lay out the requirements for staff at each of seven levels within each of their professional practice functions. Every appraisal is read by a representative from the HR team, and one from the Training and Development team, so that support can be given on an individual level to the appraiser as well as the appraisee.
