FOLLOWING THE PHILOSOPHY that everyone is entitled to have friends, relationships and their own home, KeyRing Living Support Networks helps adults with learning disabilities live independently, and also share skills and talents with each other and their communities. The inventive charity was founded in 1990 by the late Carl Poll. Local volunteers carry out frontline work as “good neighbours”, while the 161 staff form the next layer of support, doing jobs that take more time. Based in London, KeyRing supports more than 750 people in 90 networks across England and Wales. Employees believe they can make a valuable contribution to its success (88% positive, sixth among small NFPs) and say it has a strong social conscience (also 88%). They update their staff regularly as to changes and improvements which are made as a result of their feedback. Particularly useful is a document created to address the different areas staff wanted to see improvements in over the past few years. They have a Learning Programme called KeySteps. This lays out how someone's development progresses from their date of join. Its starts with Induction, moves through Mandatory training and role related training, leadership development and coaching etc. This is supported by the new Appraisal process, the Personal Development Star.
