GOOD WORKING PRACTICES put a spring in everyone's step at Marathon Oil. Perks including £100 each a year towards gym membership for employees and their spouses, as well as an active sports and social club, ensure the firm ranks in the top fifth for overall Wellbeing. Employees are happy with the balance between their jobs and home lives, returning a 75% positive score, ranking the organisation 11th. They don't feel under too much pressure to perform well (70%) and don't think they are spending too much time working (62%). With new team members given the chance to get involved in significant projects from the off, staff believe they make a valuable contribution to the success of the organisation (83%), which has been producing oil and natural gas from three platforms in the North Sea for more than 30 years. Marathon's current holdings in the UK include the company-operated Brae complex and a partnership with BP in the Foinaven field. Job satisfaction and an attractive reward package, linked to their contribution and the success of the business, results in a content and loyal workforce. Almost half of them have clocked up at least a decade of service with the firm, including 161 people who have been on the payroll for more than 15 years. Offshore technicians can expect to do 12-hour shifts for 14 days at a time in return for a basic salary of about £51,000 and are among the 86% of the 400 staff who get paid in excess of £45,000. In addition to their wages, employees, who are based across six sites, can benefit from share options, a bonus scheme, free private healthcare and staff discounts. The male-dominated workforce is happy with the pay and perks (71%) and everyone is treated fairly (69%). Both these results rank in the top quarter of companies on our list, and Marathon has risen this year from 100th place in 2013. The firm runs a car-share scheme, and it has installed hot taps to avoid using plastic and cardboard cups. Run on strong principles (77%), it does its bit to protect the environment (also 77%, a top-20 score) and encourages charitable activities (83%). Last year, 116 staff were involved in doing good deeds in work time, with activities including helping to build a kitchen for pupils at a school in Aberdeen, where the company is based. www.marathonoil.com

I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation

Marathon Oil rolled out an Employee Workplace Wellbeing Programme in January 2014 open to all offshore and onshore employees and contractors. Their aim is to bring a greater number of health interventions directly into the workplace that can have a positive impact on their workforce's health and wellbeing. Each month different wellness themes are explored with related activities and opportunities for a better understanding of how they can take control of their own health and wellbeing. Underpinning this, a Health Competition was launched open to all employees and contractors to have a number of biometrics recorded (weight, blood pressure, cholesterol etc). This information is stored confidentially then measured around mid-year with final results and winners (best overall improvement in health) being announced early next year.
