“Our clients are telling us they face a time like no other and that the pace of change is so extreme it can be overwhelming. Resilience is essential,” says legal firm Mills & Reeve LLP, which has placed clients at the heart of its new 2025 strategy and is looking to help them through the current challenges through a new Building Resilience campaign.

The law firm, founded in 1880 and based in London with offices in Norwich, Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Cambridge, also prides itself as a great employer with 97% of its people recommending the firm as a good place to work. Despite a turbulent year, every employee received a bonus of around £1,000, depending on length of service.

Since lockdown, and with over 900 of its people working from home, Mills & Reeve has provided a range of wellbeing supports, including virtual social activities and regular catch-ups. A recent Pulse survey found 71% of employees described their wellbeing as excellent, very good or good.

Company values of this long-standing Best Company to Work For are working together, respect for each other, strong client relationships and openness and integrity – and “innovation continues to run through everything we do,” Mills & Reeve says.

The company received a standout mention in the FT Innovative Lawyers Awards for developing its free Life Questions app that allows NHS workers to put their affairs in order quickly and efficiently in case they fell ill during the pandemic.

Featured Workplace Factors

Leadership

94% of staff agreed

I have confidence in the leadership skills of the senior management team

During the first lockdown, the Managing and Senior Partner began circulating a daily firm-wide email, with senior managers discussing its contents during a daily 9am call. In February 2021, the calls moved to three times a week. The wellbeing of colleagues was considered paramount and everything was done to retain people and avoid redundancy.

My Company

89% of staff agreed

I love working for this organisation

Health and safety will be a priority when a high percentage of employees are expected to return to the office soon for the first time in months. In their absence, the volume of printing, copying, records requests and mail reduced by more than 50%, so digital administrative software is on the agenda for review.

Personal Growth

77% of staff agreed

This job is good for my own personal growth

Mills & Reeves runs a number of management programmes to support both its new and existing leaders. Working with Zoom has improved access and broken down training into modules on specific topics, delivered over longer timeframes. This is mirrored in the partner development programme, which now has over 80% of the leadership team working together.

Quote from the top...
“To have received the highest three star ‘world class’ accreditation by Best Companies is a fantastic achievement and a reflection of our unstinting dedication to create a supportive environment where our people can develop and thrive. It’s an amazing accomplishment to have been recognised by Best Companies for a record 18 years running and this result stands us in good stead as we push forward with our new 2025 strategy, which outlines our ambition to become a leader in client experience, innovation, talent development and in the sectors and markets in which we operate. Being part of a culture where people feel proud to work for the firm and are clearly confident in the direction we are heading is very important, especially after a difficult 12 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our culture has never been more important as we pull together and support one other during these challenging times.”

Claire Clarke, Managing Partner - Mills & Reeve LLP
