Employees at Nexen Petroleum know the drill when it comes to giving something back. The oil and gas exploration company matches the fundraising efforts of staff, and sponsors good causes ranging from school cricket teams to cancer charities. Staff say that the organisation helps worthy causes for reasons other than good publicity (giving a 59% positive score), and that concerns for profit and budget are not the only things driving the firm (66%). They also believe the organisation does a lot to protect the environment (a positive score of 71%, ranking 41st). The subsidiary of Canadian company Nexen Inc develops, produces, markets and explores for crude oil, natural gas and energy sources. Staff say they find their work stimulating (75%). As well as supporting staff's commitment to the community and the environment, the company ensures they get a fair deal in terms of pay and perks. Engineers are paid £87,000 on average and more than half the workforce have salaries of at least £55,000. Staff also get bonuses and think their pay fairly reflects the responsibilities they have in their job (64%). Benefits include personal travel insurance, life assurance, a share option scheme and private healthcare for staff and their families. Maternity and paternity pay are above the statutory rates, and a generous 15% contribution from the company boosts employees' 5% pension payment. A 70% score, putting Nexen among the top third of companies, shows people are happy with their pay and benefits. They don't feel the organisation takes advantage of them (64%) and say they have a good balance between their work and home lives (69%). Most employees work flexitime and compressed hours, which allows them to take two Fridays off each month. People don't feel under too much pressure to perform well (69%) and believe they can make a difference (74%). Opportunities to work overseas and a focus on training and development mean people believe the experience they gain in their job is valuable for their future (78%).
