Every member of staff at Oasis Community Housing and their clients are valued for who they are. The organisation believes in the need for staff to treat team members with the same respect they treat those who use the service.

Oasis was started in 1984 by students who wanted to help homeless people in Gateshead. Today it also covers Sunderland, South Tyneside and south London. The aim is to address the causes of homelessness, as well as immediate needs. The people Oasis supports include youngsters who are homeless, families suffering from domestic abuse and rough sleepers who need help with employment.

The organisation's values are "hope", "worth", "perseverance", "life" and "inclusion". They are championed by managers who lead regular sessions with staff to discuss them. The message is that the values are not just words on paper, but a reflection of daily interactions with clients and colleagues.

Hope represents the idea that clients are encouraged to dream big, with the hope that things can change. Worth means believing in the inherent worth and dignity of all people. Perseverance demonstrates a commitment to people and communities for the long term and that people will be given second, third and even fourth chances. Life means that the organisation works to enable "life in all its fulness" to become a reality for clients.

Oasis's ambition is for everyone to be part of a community where they are included, belong and have what they need to reach their potential.

It’s very important to us to engage with and understand our employee’s experience of working with us. As well as Best Companies, we also carry out regular, short and anonymised surveys to provide feedback about how we are performing as an organisation. We use this feedback to make changes where we can. For example, we set up a wellbeing working group and implemented new wellbeing initiatives.
