Oscar Faber is a "top-class company that pays top-class wages", according to one employee. Such an accolade is common when staff talk about the consultancy that has expanded its workforce by almost 50% in the past two years. Oscar Faber, which celebrates its 80th birthday this year, often acts as a project manager. Its staff, who work in 14 offices in Britain, get a chance to take part in high-profile projects, such as construction of a £50m hospital in Worcester, systems to improve bus transport in London, and the refurbishment of the 220-year-old Somerset House on the Thames Embankment into a museum and gallery. Staff give the firm high marks for a "relaxed and unpressured" environment. About 92% say that management trusts people to do a good job. Management also listens to its workers. After a 1998 survey showed some unhappiness with benefits, the firm implemented a 'FlexAbility' scheme that enables people to structure their benefit packages to suit themselves. Now employees are allocated a total cash fund representing salary and benefits and they can stipulate how much they want to spend on different benefits such as childcare expenses, dental insurance, computer equipment or holiday (they can buy extra days or reduce their holiday allowance). Benefits can be swapped once a year. A share-save programme was also adopted.
