One of the UK's leading shoe retailers, York-based Pavers has remained family-owned-and-run since its 1971 foundation by Catherine Paver. She took out a £200 bank loan for her footwear startup with the mission to find the perfect style for every foot.

Her sons Graham, Stuart (now the Managing Director) and Ian joined the company and what started out small at village halls and house parties has grown into a business that also owns and operates Jones Bootmaker and Herring Shoes, counting 170 stores across the UK and Ireland with more than 1,400 employees.

Staff reflect the company's passion about providing comfort, value and happiness to customers and Pavers is proud to provide great jobs in a supportive family-feel environment for happy, confident and upbeat employees. Pavers Shoes took another step on the road to environmental sustainability this year, by becoming a signatory of the Unite Nations' Climate Neutral Now initiative.

Reducing its environmental impact is a constant goal for the company, which boasts one of the north east's largest solar arrays. Both Pavers and Jones Bootmaker are carbon neutral organisations. Care for staff wellbeing over the difficult past year has included signposting employees to Pavers' membership of Retail Trust, which provides confidential emotional and financial wellbeing support, and paying up to two hours' wages for employees to attend their vaccine appointments.

As a non-essential retailer Pavers has had to close stores repeatedly during the pandemic. The managing director sends weekly updates to everyone's home email addresses, covering business news, personal insights and recognising employees' achievements. A monthly "Ask the Boss" Facebook live session offers a two-way dialogue between team members and senior leaders.

Stringent covid-secure measures were implemented in warehouses and offices for those whose jobs could not be done at home. A bonus was paid to those who worked during the first lockdown, while managers also received gifts and thank-yous from the owners at Christmas. Light-hearted competitions – often with a footwear theme – helped keep morale up and company directors shared their lockdown keep fit tips.

Social responsibility is ingrained at Pavers, which donated over £2.2m to establish its own charitable foundation 2018. The foundation provides grants for causes close to the hearts of the workforce in the areas of health, education and community. During the pandemic it donated over £200,000 to various charities and community initiatives.
