PEOPLE AT PHP (Poole Housing Partnership) always get to hear when they have done a good job. The small social housing provider manages more than 5,000 properties for the borough of Poole, on the Dorset coast. New recruits receive a welcome pack and a formal induction ends with a visit to a tower block with great views across the town and harbour. People here believe they can make a valuable contribution to the partnership's success (82% positive). The social landlord has installed photovoltaic panels on 1,500 of its properties, as well as on the roof of its headquarters. Staff believe that the association cares about the environment (84%, ranking fourth among small organisations). Employees went the extra mile for their clients last year, using volunteering days to create a sensory garden for elderly and vulnerable residents, including a “wildlife walk”, a barbecue area and a courtyard with scented plants. A dedicated member of staff also works with residents to create community gardens for growing fresh produce, and encourages people of all ages to get involved and make new friends. PHP says there are community gardens in areas where nobody believed they could work. In addition, the organisation has offered in-house space to the local credit union to enable ease of access for residents. In addition to the south garden, which also includes a BBQ area for summer parties, a ‘wildlife walk' has been created with elevated views of Poole Harbour, and a courtyard with beautifully scented evergreen pine, rosemary and euphorbia. Residents are thrilled with the results. This has had the desired impact of encouraging elderly residents to leave their flats and enjoy the gardens and socialise with other residents; with important health benefits. There are now successful community gardens in areas that no-one believed they could work, and local youngsters are getting to understand where their food comes from, and learn about healthy eating. They support the local credit union (Coastal Community Savings and Loans) and offer the time of their staff to support the running and good governance of this organisation.
