Staff at West Country coastal seafood chain Rockfish are encouraged to enjoy being by the sea and paddle boards are provided for them to use during break times.

In an industry where short-term employment is commonplace, Rockfish works hard to be a great place to work, to create jobs that people enjoy and be a company where staff can settle down and build a career.

This ethos seems to be working, and people tend to stay with the company for a long time. Paying decent money helps, but Rockfish believes there is much more to creating great jobs than just paying well.

It offers a comprehensive training programme and a dedicated trainer within the company. Its management team have been promoted from within the business. All training is supported by individually designed printed material and staff are regularly appraised and trained to the highest standards.

The company employs 305 staff and has seven seafood restaurants and takeaways in south Devon and Dorset. It was founded in 2008 by restaurateur Mitch Tonks and celebrates local and sustainable seafood. Its menu includes local fish, freshly fried, grilled or cooked on the plancha, plus cracked crab, scallops in the half-shell, fried local hake and whole sea bass.

The company's own boat, Rockfisher, lands all of its catch for Rockfish. The business includes a wholesale, high-tech facility on Brixham fish market, enabling it to deliver fresh seafood to its restaurants and directly to homes across Britain.
