The Plaice to Talk is the staff forum at Seafish, a public body set up to improve improve efficiency and standards in the seafood industry. The forum provides a means for workers to learn about projects. It was launched after staff said they wanted to be told earlier about changes and to be involved in them.

Seafish is a non-departmental public body set up by the 1981 Fisheries Act. It works with people from the seafood sector — from fishermen and processors, to importers, retailers and food service providers — to help them to overcome challenges and seize opportunities.

The work it does keeps fishermen safe, supports sustainable sourcing, helps businesses work efficiently and promotes seafood as part of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Supporting such a large industry that’s constantly changing, Seafish staff have to be ready for every challenge that comes their way: tackling everything from research to campaigns, insights to training.

The organisation says no two days are ever the same, and it’s this changeability that makes it an exciting organisation to work for.

The Seafish mission — to give the UK seafood sector the support it needs to thrive — drives everything it does. The recent introduction of a "results-only work environment" has seen staff experience a huge culture shift. The decision to move away from the traditional workplace environment was agreed upon after listening to the needs and priorities of staff. Seafish is now an organisation that focuses on output, rather than hours.

Quote from the top...
Our ethos as Seafish is a simple one; we are striving to create one of the best places to work in the UK. If we create the best working environment for ourselves, we will give us the best chances of producing our very best work and in doing so we will provide the highest levels of service to the industry we are here to support. Underpinning this ethos is staff engagement. We all know how we as individuals prefer to work and we are each best-placed to define the conditions that help us perform to the best of our ability. At Seafish we are inspired by the Results only Work Environment (ROWE) concept in which everyone working here takes time out to clearly define the results that are expected of them and then they are free to deliver those results in the way that best meets all the demands they have in life. Results definition and the clarity that that brings through dialogue between managers and staff is a continuous process with staff rewarded proportionately for their performance throughout the year. Throughout the pandemic we stepped up our engagement and communication efforts with monthly all staff ‘Spotlight’ meetings to keep everyone informed on latest news and our response to Covid-19 restrictions. We continued to promote wellbeing, emphasising the importance of taking care of yourself and those around you. Our staff led Wellbeing Group is at the heart of these initiatives. We were, of course, extremely sympathetic and accommodating of our staff who found themselves with unexpected caring responsibilities or illness within their family units. We have implemented new collaborative software with new laptops and mobile phones for all staff to enhance our remote, but connected, operating model. We are optimistic that we will emerge from the difficult pandemic period as an even better connected, even more caring and even more accommodating organisation than ever before.
