The law firm Shakespeare Martineau sounds traditional enough, dealing with divorce, commercial disputes and personal injury. But in other ways it's a little different.

Deep-breathing activities were on the agenda at its summer assessment centres. The chief executive broadcasts to colleagues from her garden shed. And she sings, (though not in court.)

The company, founded in 2015, is based in Birmingham and has offices around England and in Glasgow. Sectors in which it operates include banking, healthcare, sport and charities.

It aims to remove unnecessary barriers to recruitment and reaches out to build relationships with new talent by running virtual experiences for those at school and university.

Employees can develop their skills and knowledge, wherever they are on their career path, through the Shakespeare Martineau Academy. There is also an internal mentoring scheme.

Sarah Walker-Smith, the CEO, speaks to potential new recruits at events and communicates across the business by posting Shed Life video updates.

Last December the leadership team presented a virtual seminar to provide staff with an insight into this large company's road map for the coming years. Meanwhile, advice and help are available for colleagues who are continuing to work from home while social restrictions apply due to the coronavirus.

Shakespeare Martineau updated its IT systems during the pandemic, which required extensive upskilling that was completed in a virtual environment.
