THEIR JOB IS to help customers “celebrate life and express love”, and employees at Signet Jewellers add a little sparkle to each other's lives, too. The company, which operates well known high-street chains Ernest Jones, H Samuel and Leslie Davis, ranks seventh overall for My Team, with caring colleagues (76% positive) going out of their way to help each other and having fun (both 80%). The world's largest retailer of diamond jewellery, Signet employs more than 5,000 people in the UK, in shops, two support centres and its Borehamwood headquarters. Four of the 11 executive team are women, providing role models for the mostly female workforce. Job satisfaction is founded on good working relationships, supportive line managers who motivate staff to give their best every day (69%), and people knowing what is expected of them (74%). Yet employees gave just a 44% positive score when asked if they felt fairly paid relative to others in the sector, the third lowest score. The company's in-house academy structure enables employees to improve their technical knowledge and broaden their skills, and a new development programme for high-performing store managers has been launched. The Signet group, which also operates more than 3,000 stores in North America, has introduced a global online staff magazine providing news and updates from its businesses in the UK, USA and Canada.
