Not many companies can claim that the effects of its good deeds reach as far as a mango plantation in India. But St Luke's Communications is aware of its carbon footprint, and has attempted to redress the balance through supporting a reforestation scheme. Staff give the company a top 10 score of 83% for its efforts to help the environment. The agency, founded in 1995, produces television, radio and poster campaigns for clients including Fairtrade (Divine chocolate), Ikea Germany and DfES adult literacy. Shares are distributed equally to all employees every year. Staff say they love working for the organisation (78%) and are proud to do so (83%). The firm's London office is powered by renewable electricity and St Luke's also puts a lot of energy into treating staff well. After three years, holiday increases from 25 days to 30 days for all staff. Five years' service is rewarded with a paid 20-day sabbatical. After 10 years with the company, a 60-day paid sabbatical is given. Staff feel the organisation really acknowledges the value of their contribution (80%). Employees say that their efforts to support good causes outside the business are supported (83%), earning another top 10 ranking. Every employee is given the equivalent of a week each year which they can use to get involved in community projects. Staff say their job is good for personal growth, returning an 82% score. A "Make Yourself More Interesting" scheme gives employees an annual allowance of £150 to spend on developing a skill. This has been put towards Open University study, massage courses and language lessons. Flexible working is supported and one example is Shelley Davies, head of creative services, who recently returned from maternity leave and works 3 days a week from both the office and home. The company pays above the statutory rate for maternity and paternity leave and staff say the firm really tries to help them (81%).
