Starting life as the Isle of Man Home for Orphaned and Destitute Children, the Children's Centre opened in 1868, and children and families remain at the heart of its work. The charity runs 15 services across the island, including childcare, play and adventure activities and it also provides residential care and support services, alongside projects that support Manx families from pregnancy through to teenage years. It offers help and advice on a number of issues, including divorce, child behaviour and budgeting, and funds public projects, including a community farm, based just outside Douglas. Here, children and families can care for animals, including pigs, goats, donkeys and sheep, and grow a variety of plants and edible crops. Its 140 staff are proud to work for the Children's Centre, scoring 84% positive, and they say the organisation makes a positive difference in the world (87%). Work is an important part of life for Children's Centre employees (84%, in eighth place among small organisations), but people say that they have fun too (84%). A recognition scheme, the “above and beyond award”, offers a chance for staff to nominate colleagues who they feel have gone the extra mile in the course of their work. Successful team members are rewarded with money, and awards are handed out at an employee celebration evening, which is attended by members of the board of trustees as well as colleagues. Staff also put the effort in when it comes to raising money for the Children's Centre. In 2010, employees and locals raised money by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa, and will do it again this year. The Children's Centre encourages charitable activities, say workers (87%), who help organise a range of money-raising events, from fun pub quizzes and Bollywood-themed evenings to sledging in the Arctic Circle. Staff believe they can make a contribution to the success of the organisation (85%). Free occupational health services, including counselling and massage sessions, are on offer to all employees, who are also eligible for a range of benefits, such as on-site crèche facilities, childcare vouchers, dental insurance, life assurance and a contributory pension. Workers say their health is not suffering as a result of their work (76%), and managers take an active interest in their wellbeing (75%). People love working for the organisation (83%) and say their jobs help their personal growth (80%).

My team is fun to work with
Induction Days are held three/four times per year for staff new to the organisation. This is a generic induction to the organisation, its history and development. Colleagues from many different disciplines and departments participate who may not physically work in the same building/facility or setting, and who would not meet one another in the course of their work generally. Participants are put into teams to have a go at a series of activities and challenges in which they learn about themselves, their colleagues and the organisation. The emphasis is on working together and having fun. At one event a member of the Fostering Service met and worked with a new member from the Supervised Contact Centre, and as a result within the year successfully recruited them as a Foster Carer.
