STAFF WERE SURPRISED in the middle of their working day last year when brass bands struck up at its London headquarters to mark the milestone of The Net-a-Porter Group hiring its 1,000th employee. Spontaneous celebrations such as these not only brighten up the offices, they make workers feel excited about where the online designer clothes retailer is going, winning an 81% positive score in our survey, just outside the top 20 on this indicator. There's good reason for their optimism. Staff numbers almost doubled in the year to August 2011 to cater for the launch of the new online designer shop for men, Mr Porter, and growing sales. The group, which also includes online discount shop The Outnet, saw revenues rise by more than 50% to £238m last year while pre-tax profits jumped nearly £9m to £34.5m. Staff believe they can make a valuable contribution to the success of the firm (an 80% positive score in our survey) and feel they can make a difference within it, too (77%). Net-a-Porter, which was bought by the Richemont Group in 2010 for a reported £350m, received more than 70 expressions of interest from staff keen to get involved in its plans for expansion in Asia. Five members of staff will be seconded to Hong Kong and a further 30 will work on the project team. Natalie Massenet, the founder and chairman, nurtures grassroots innovation and encourages staff to email her with ideas. She is an inspiration to employees (79%), who also have a great deal of faith in her (78%). Workers are happy with their pay and benefits (60%). Just over half of them earn between £15,000 and £25,000, including distribution assistants, who earn about £16,300, and perks range from staff sales to health and beauty treatments and profit-related pay. Staff love working for the group (75%) , are proud to do so and have fun (both 80%). The firm says more than 3,000 people apply for a job here every week. www.net-a-porter.com
