LUXURY BED LINEN, marble bathrooms, personalised wake-up calls and a butler is the sort of five-star service available at The Savoy, located on the Strand in central London. Popular with the rich and famous, the 124-year-old hotel, which reopened in 2010 after a £220m refurbishment lasting almost three years, includes nine suites themed around notable former guests including Charlie Chaplin, Marlene Dietrich and Frank Sinatra, a £10,000-a-night royal suite and an art deco champagne bar featuring £38,000 worth of gold leaf on the walls. Nothing is too much trouble for staff, whose work is an important part of their life and a source of great pride, both of these questions delivering 88% positive scores for the hotel. Home to the actor Richard Harris for 12 years before he died in 2002, The Savoy's mission is to turn moments into memories for all its guests, and it ensures its employees are prepared through its training programmes, which include job shadowing, coaching and an internal management development scheme. With more than 100 people promoted or transferred each year, the 513 staff say experience gained is valuable for their future (85%) and that their job is good for their personal growth (81%). Respect, integrity, empowerment and teamwork are the guiding principles of The Savoy and there are recognition programmes and team-building events, from the all-colleague gala to competitions and daily briefings. Workers believe they can make a valuable contribution to the success of the hotel (88%), owned by Saudi billionaire Prince Alwaleed bin Talal and managed by Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, not least because they are clear about what is expected of them (80%). Two-thirds of staff earn between £15,000 and £25,000 and team members, who put in an average 45 hours a week, say they are exhausted most days when they get home, giving just a 36% score. This doesn't stop them loving their job (78%). Committed to being green, The Savoy sends all unused and unwanted food to be recycled and used as energy, and it heats hotel water with energy obtained from its refrigerators. Staff say the hotel genuinely cares about the environment (86%, a ranking beaten by just two other companies on our list), and take part in the twice-yearly Thames foreshore clean-up.
