The ambition at TotallyMoney is to improve the UK's credit score and the company works with credit bureaus, market-leading lenders, recruiters, charities — and many more – to help people move on up to a better financial future. It has been voted No1 in its sector on Trustpilot.

The small FinTech operation was founded in 2007 by Will Becker and Jonathan Hassid. Via its website and app, it specialises in eligibility checking, credit comparison, and translating complicated credit data to meaningfully present this to clients. Over the past year TotallyMoney revamped its car finance platform and launched switching services for car insurance and energy.

With company culture being led from the bottom-up, the 80 employees who have helped 3m customers have also shaped the workplace environment: one that is collaborative, inclusive and authentic. There is a new office moments from London's Old Street roundabout designed for work but with a playful side: a DJ booth; a bar; plenty of plants; and spaces for solo working and collaboration.

As a regulated business, in 2019 the Financial Conduct Authority required TotallyMoney to capture new information from customers, known as Additional Affordability Questions. This was a significant challenge as often people do not like to fill in detailed extra forms and it caused approximately 30% of customers to drop off.

The team addressed these challenges by focusing on the company's core values that include account for yourself and help everyone step up. The result was that by that August 1m customers had successfully completed these further questions.

My Company

I love working for this organisation

TotallyMoney was “delighted” to be able to bring back the portion of its team that it “regrettably had to furlough”. To help with reintegration, a newsletter titled Top 10 Changes Since April was compiled, and to celebrate there was a virtual escape room social and welcome back drinks.

Personal Growth

92% of staff agreed

This job is good for my own personal growth

As an FCA regulated company, compliance training is vital for staff to make sure TotallyMoney acts with due diligence and puts the customers first. This moved online, as did TotallyMoney Essentials training sessions with a curriculum comprising 18 different classes delivered by subject experts from across the business.

My Team

97% of staff agreed

My team is fun to work with

The company wanted staff to have informal chats as they would do in the office, so it introduced a Slack tool called Donut, which randomly pairs two employees once every fortnight to meet up virtually for a coffee and video chat. It was also a way to help new people to settle in.

Quote from the top...
“I’m so proud that TotallyMoney has once again been chosen as one of the best companies to work for. It’s a testament to the team’s hard work, finding new and inventive ways to help our people stay engaged and thrive at a time when it would be all too easy to drift apart. TotallyMoney has always been about helping people step up and achieve their potential, and that goes for our staff just as much as our customers. That’s why being the best place to work is such a big part of our mission. But the last twelve months have blurred the boundary between work and home like never before – the workplace is now the study, or the kitchen table, or the bedroom. It’s never been so important to look after company culture and employee wellbeing. We recognised early that we were in this for the long haul. We haven’t let restrictions stop us socialising, giving back to the community, or investing in physical and mental wellbeing. Instead, we’ve put substantial measures in place to ensure we continue to be a unique, engaging place to work. For one thing, we’ve been inventive with our company socials. It’s not unusual to find us in a chocolate tasting class, a virtual escape room, or a kokedama workshop. We know Zoom can get pretty exhausting, so we’ve made the effort to break the mould and make socials worth getting excited about. When it comes to wellbeing, we’ve doubled-down on providing virtual solutions like Self Space therapy sessions, monthly mindfulness classes and yoga. But beyond that, we’ve also introduced an “amber” status on Slack, to let people know when you need a little space, plus more flexible hours so everyone can better juggle work with their other responsibilities. And we haven’t let up when it comes to training, either. New starters get a full, virtual induction, we have “essential” training for people in the first three years of their careers, new manager training, plus we encourage all employees to make use of a learning budget to expand their knowledge and skill sets. All in all, it’s been a tough year, but I’m so pleased with how the team has pulled together. Making this shortlist proves that TotallyMoney continues to be a place people love to work. Thanks to everyone’s hard work, I’m confident we’ll be an even stronger team than before, when we get to see each other again.”

Alastair Douglas, CEO - TotallyMoney
