Toyota (GB) PLC (TGB) demonstrated its commitment to putting its people first by introducing ‘TGB Unlocked' during the pandemic.
This gives every employee the power to block off a few hours in their diary, log off and enjoy some ‘me time'. This could be by going for a walk, watching the latest hit TV series, cooking a favourite meal or simply spending time with their family.
Based in a purpose-built eco-HQ in the Surrey Hills, TGB provides marketing and sales support for the UK-wide Toyota and Lexus dealer network.
It believes each of its 350 employees should have a great work-life balance – and wants everyone to want to come to work.
This ethos is reflected in Project Jikan. ‘Jikan' is the Japanese word for time and strategies such as setting maximum meeting lengths and ensuring every meeting has a purpose are designed to respect everyone's time.
During Covid, staff who were juggling extra responsibilities, such as home-schooling, and those who were shielding were reminded that they needn't try to meet all their normal work goals.
In addition, under-utilised staff have been redeployed to areas in need an extra pair of hands and employees who find remote working difficult or isolating have been able to return to the office.

The Management Development Programme (MDP) enables managers to coach, support and manage their teams effectively. It was created after senior managers found the Leadership Development Programme (LDP) so beneficial that they wanted to be able to offer the managers in their teams the chance to learn similar skills and techniques.

When TGB's new President and Managing Director, Agustin Martin, joined, he introduced himself virtually via video to every member of staff. He also made a commitment to meet each and every TGB employee for a 15-minute introduction, whether in person or virtually.

Resilience workshops held during the pandemic have provided tools and tips for building and managing resilience. They have also reinforced the message that ‘it's OK not to be OK' and made it clear that asking for help is not a weakness.
