A philanthropic approach to employees and a strong entrepreneurial spirit are at the heart of this business, and Unilever believes in the highest standards of corporate behaviour towards employees and consumers. “It is an exceptionally human company, and its people are top of its agenda,” says Atif Sheik, senior brand manager for snacks. More than three-quarters of employees are proud to work for Unilever and believe they make a contribution to its success.

The company dates from 1885 in Britain, when William and James Lever teamed up as Lever Brothers to launch Sunlight, the world's first branded and packaged laundry soap. Unilever is now one of the world's leading consumer goods companies, with products such as Persil, Flora, Magnum

and Lynx. One of the firm's two global headquarters is in London and there are research facilities in Port Sunlight, Merseyside, and Colworth, West Sussex.

To keep employees in touch there are consultation groups, team briefings and company magazines.

The training budget is £5.2m, and high-potential graduate trainees receive £15,000-£20,000 of training a year. Benefits are constantly evolving, and 77% of staff feel their benefits are fair compared with similar firms. A deal giving managers performance-related pay was introduced last year.

Maternity pay is the best in our survey, with 40 weeks at full pay after one year of service and paid adoptive leave of up to 90 days. Some crèche facilities are provided and gym membership is subsidised.
