Feedback is important to the Guild of Students, the students' union looking after 38,000 people taking courses at the University of Birmingham. An annual survey and regular pulse surveys keep senior managers in close touch with the guild's team of 70 people.

They run the not-for-profit organisation with the help of more than 200 student part-timers and 2,500 volunteers. The guild's guiding values are representative, supportive and fun: it has students' backs, providing advice and helping everyone to develop skills outside study, meet new people and have a great time at university. Following feedback from a pulse survey in January 2021, every employee was given £50 towards extra resources to make working from home easier.

All staff had already been given a laptop at the beginning of the pandemic. People also told senior managers they wanted more opportunities to meet informally and network: the CEO hosted virtual quiz events and held coffee mornings in response. A weekly newsletter has kept staff in the loop, including those on furlough, with sections on wellbeing and diversity.

The guild has an inclusive culture which recognises and celebrates success, where everyone can learn, achieve and thrive. Team members are supported to think creatively, remove obstacles and see a broader range of options. The guild encourages applications from internal candidates for vacant roles. Some staff have been able to gain valuable experience in fixed-term roles, for example covering maternity leave, enabling them to take their careers to a new level.
