Just over 50 years old and growing rapidly, YUSU provides a wide range of charitable and trading services and activities designed to improve students' lives and support students to make the most of their time at York. Among the largest charities in North Yorkshire, they aim to be amongst the best students' unions in the UK. Rapid growth over the last five years has seen turnover approach £5.5m annually; their employee population approach almost 200 staff, including around 150 part time student staff, their student participation increase, student satisfaction ratings improve and their estate grow. At least 3 times per year awards are distributed to staff who demonstrated their core organisational values in their work and behaviours, these are: for, with and by students; brave and inclusive. The winners receive oscar style statues that they can display, a speech explaining how they showed that value with feedback from other staff, customers and stakeholders, get a written copy of the feedback and a modest gift to thank them.
