“No nonsense, maximum expertise” is the attitude shared by the team of the digital agency Waste Creative. It is a mindset that allowed the business to exploit the pandemic boom in the gaming sector through its operations in London and Los Angeles with a minimum of fuss.

Founded in 2006, Waste Creative was named Agency of the Year 2020 at the Drum Content Awards and has achieved more than 70 award nominations for its services spanning strategy, creative, social and web content. Feedback from its 79 specialists in anonymous monthly surveys is highlighted on its Live Board.

After one of its monthly reviews of staff concerns, the senior team introduced opportunities to celebrate good work on multiple channels while employees were working from home – ranging from shout-outs during company-wide meetings to the Spotlight section in the company newsletter and a dedicated Slack channel called Kudos. Waste Creative's social committee has worked hard to keep people connected and engaged.

As well as summer and Christmas parties, colleagues have regularly caught up on Zoom calls, once joined by a surprise guest – a llama! The agency, whose clients include the mobile gaming giant Supercell and the energy leader Centrica, invited team members to enter a virtual version of the London office in the Nintendo game Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The game was also open to prospective staff – and one online player won a three-month paid internship to learn from the creative team.

85% of staff agreed

This organisation has a strong social conscience

The digital agency has teamed up with SpecialEffect, a charity which helps physically disabled children play video games. Staff members have held fundraising events such as quizzes to help the charity make technology more widely available in homes, rehabilitation centres and hospitals.
