Practices: At this council staff who promote change and progress are rewarded. There are 12 £1,000 awards each quarter and an annual £5,000 award. Westminster runs regular “sounding boards” where staff can air their ideas and concerns to the leadership team. The leader and chief executive undertake regular events where they drop in on a service and talk to staff. Westminster provides a personal advice line to help staff to tackle personal, financial and emotional issues — advice is given over the phone and face-to-face counselling and legal advice may also be provided. Pay and benefits: Job sharing, home working, reduced hours, flexi time, school hours and term time-only contracts are available to all. Employees with five years' service can get up to four weeks of paid and eight weeks of unpaid leave. The council allows up to 63 weeks' maternity leave. On top of statutory maternity pay, mothers receive an additional 12 weeks at half-pay. Depending on length of service, the council will pay up to two weeks on full pay for paternity leave. Performance-related pay, free sports facilities and additional leave for moving house are available to all staff. A staff card scheme gives staff discounts in shops, restaurants and leisure locations.
