A trained athlete mentored staff by leading Active in Mind sessions at the Youth Sport Trust, giving them tips to keep a positive mindset during the pandemic. With their resilience buoyed up, staff could continue to focus on helping to change young people's lives for the better through sport.

The trust was set up in 1995 and new recruits say they can feel the passion and drive to make a difference as soon as they walk in.

Based in Charnwood, Leicestershire, the charity has moved to a remote working model to deliver sports programmes in thousands of UK schools and to guide government policy. Will Roberts, the chief operating officer, said: “We know that playing sport and keeping active can help pave the road to recovery for a generation of children who have seen the most extraordinary disruption to their lives and education.”

The workforce has kept fit during the working day through the Active 30 programme. All staff have been able to join Personal Energy sessions led by the trust's partner, the Bupa Foundation. Extra training has taught line managers to spot signs of distress – and how to look after themselves too.

A weekly quiz, started by a staff member a year ago, has raised morale and its results are eagerly anticipated at Monday morning briefings. The trust has stepped up communication with staff working remotely, and CEO Alison Oliver's weekly webinars have had more than 90% attendance. Two pulse surveys last May and November helped to improve engagement.

Representatives from the workforce joined a collective consultation group to talk over cost cuts at the Youth Sport Trust to protect the sustainability of the charity during the pandemic. The forum discussed ways to tighten financial management and increase communication with funding bodies.

New working practices during the pandemic have helped the Youth Sport Trust to reduce printing and car journeys. Longer term, the trust will continue to use e-signature technology for paperless contracts and continue to offset its carbon footprint by planting new native trees in the UK through the Woodland Trust.
