There might be less gas in Cobra Beer but there is no lack of fizz among its 95-strong workforce. At the head office in London, staff say they have a lot of fun working with their colleagues, with a positive score of 86%, and feel a strong sense of family (82%) — one of the firm's principles is "family values". Cobra Beer, started by Lord Karan Bilimoria in 1989, is good at cracking open the bottles for a party. Every July, all employees are invited with their families to enjoy a day of food, drink and activities including clay pigeon shooting and a climbing wall. Last year, chefs were hired and live music laid on at the Sussex home of one of the directors. There are department outings, with two days in Berlin last year for the marketing team. And at the Christmas party people are regaled with a set of company awards, including employee, salesperson and idea of the year, plus a Going the Extra Mile (Gem) prize. Staff get performance-related pay and extra days off for hard work. Holiday ranges from 21 to 25 days a year and most staff have been at the company for more than three years. Employees say the firm makes a positive difference to the world (67%). Last year it launched the Cobra Foundation, a fundraising charity that gives grants, including £3,000 for an Indian oncologist to visit the UK and develop his skills at cancer research centres. In the office, paper and other products are recycled, and used grain at the breweries is turned into cattlefeed or fuel to generate power. The workforce says Bilimoria runs the firm on sound moral principles (84%). People feel that the experience they get from their job is valuable for their future (84%) — one result of the company encouraging extra training. Cobra Beer gets involved with responsible drinking campaigns and staff are excited about where it is going — the 88% positive score here ranking the organisation 14th among all 100 SMEs in our survey.
