Paddington Bear has been given a new lease of life thanks to communications agency DDB UK introducing him to Marmite in recent television and radio adverts. It takes more than the love it or hate it debate to divide DDB's workforce—a 79% positive score, ranking the firm ninth overall, shows there is a strong sense of family in teams. Central to the company's recruitment policy are two qualities—everyone who joins DDB simply has to be talented and nice. Employee scores suggest this hiring technique creates a great cohesive environment. They find teams fun to work with (85%, a top 20 score), colleagues really care for each other (83%, ranking it 11th) and working together gives people a buzz (70%). The London-based company promotes clients that also include Volkswagen, Philips and Nestlé, both in the UK and globally. Staff say working at DDB is good for their personal growth (79%). Annual appraisals are a chance to discuss their career development plan and to set professional goals. People say there are good chances to learn and grow within the organisation (64%) and believe the experience they gain will be valuable for the future (79%). A top 20 score of 77% shows people find their work stimulating. They consider it an important part of their lives (81%, ranking the firm 11th) and love working for the organisation (75%). Staff management and leadership training is offered across the DDB network of companies, which operate in nearly 100 countries. Employees from around the world learn from each other and share their knowledge and experiences. Staff say managers care about them as individuals (76%), are excellent role models (67%) and are interested in their job satisfaction (71%). Employees have confidence in the leadership skills of their manager (74%). Stephen Woodford, the UK chief executive and chairman, sends e-mails to staff every week to inform them of the latest news, to introduce new employees, to update people of new work and to recognise staff achievements. A 65% positive score shows people think senior managers do a lot of listening as well as telling, ranking 53rd. As well as free private healthcare for staff and their family, life assurance and an employee assistance programme, everyone can help themselves to free breakfast and enjoy treatments from the firm's beautician and take part in subsidised language classes.
