The National Composites Centre is a composite research and development facility; where innovators go when they need to make things lighter, stronger, smarter and more sustainable.
With access to 'beyond' state-of-the-art technology and the best composites engineering capabilities in the world, the National Composites Centre collaborates with customers to solve the most complex engineering challenges of our time.
Part of the High Value Manufacturing Catapult, the National Composites Centre works across all manufacturing sectors and has forged strong links with aerospace, energy, defence, space, construction, infrastructure, auto, rail, marine and biomedical. It works with organisations across the board from micro enterprises through to SME to disrupters, supply chain and OEMs, providing businesses with a de-risked environment to design, develop, test and scale their ideas and get them to market.
The organisation has several environmental policies. Composites already play an important role in decarbonisation, but the National Composites Centre goes beyond this by partnering in the SusWind project.
Delivered in partnership with the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult and supported by The Crown Estate and RenewableUK, SusWIND will discover and demonstrate viable ways to recycle composite wind turbine blades, to explore the use of sustainable materials and processes in developing composites for blades, and to innovate in design to future-proof the turbine blades of tomorrow.
Advancing offshore wind is the first step in the Prime Minister’s 10-point plan for a Green Industrial Revolution, given it is such a critical source of renewable energy for a growing economy.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
One of their most recent innovative programmes is the Composites Conversion course which provided intensive training in composites manufacturing to non- composites engineers. The programme involved a three month taught programme, hands on practical workshops, mentoring, and a ‘design and build' project to consolidate the learning. They offer mentoring and coaching, including career coaching which is taken up by approximately 15% of employees.
The experience I gain from this job is valuable for my future
The National Composites Centre offers a range of learning and development opportunities for its employees. It has its own online learning platform, offers bespoke and group training, open training courses, and has joined with Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University to support the re-launch of the Northern Ireland Advanced Composites and Engineering Centre (NIACE).
