“Developing skilled and employable people that stand out from the crowd” is the ethos of CF10 – one it shares with Cardiff and Vale College (CAVC) in delivering its retail, catering and venue hire operations across its five campuses.
CF10, a wholly-owned subsidiary of CAVC, manages catering facilities for 30,000 learners and 1,000 staff. It also oversees its coffee shops, restaurant chains, convenience stores and venues, including a new inflatable dome for hire.
At the heart of the college community, it employs students, offers work placements and sells student-produced goods, such as bakery items produced daily by the College’s Hospitality and Catering students.
And CF10 is the first company in Wales to place employees through ‘Project Search’ – an international work programme committed to transforming the lives of young people with learning difficulties and autism.
CF10 prides itself on prioritising the health and wellbeing of its staff. They get generous holiday allowances, including an extra day off for their birthdays, a fully-funded health plan that also benefits their loved ones, and an employee assistance programme giving access to counselling services if they need additional support.
To boost its caring credentials, the company has also appointed a dedicated Wellbeing Officer who is trialling new options for staff therapies. They are also organising get-togethers from charity events to quiz nights and supporting the creation of a new staff association to encourage socialising within CF10 and the wider CAVC team.

An online community allows staff to create groups to support wellbeing. These include the Menopause support group, virtual yoga, a book club and sporting events. These groups are promoted by the wellbeing group and staff association. There are also joint fundraising events between CF10 and Cardiff and Vale College.

CF10 aims to promote from within, with 100% of its managers rising through the ranks. Various internally delivered management modules cover core skills; managers can also take more formal qualifications. All staff also have the opportunity to gain formal teaching qualifications through a dedicated programme.
This organisation is keen to help people from disadvantaged backgrounds
A successful trial with Fareshare Cymru has seen waste food being used to produce meals. And CF10 has reworked its menus to reduce the amount of food that goes to waste in the first place. Customers can take used coffee grounds for their gardens, and the company only uses products from sustainable sources.
