This charity's mission is to increase the number and standard of professionally qualified managers. When it comes to its own managers and the rest of its team, the Chartered Management Institute seeks to lead from the front, always guided by its four values: being professional, progressive, passionate and practical.

CMI was founded in 1947 to help rebuild British industry in the wake of the Second World War. Today it has more than 143,000 members, including 90,000 learners who are studying for one of its qualifications and 10,500 chartered managers.

The institute offers a flexible work culture, development opportunities, including apprenticeships and mentoring, and employee recognition schemes. Regular short surveys are held, asking staff: “What else do you need that would help you?”

CMI's People's Choice award is held three times a year. Individuals or teams are nominated by colleagues, and the entire workforce – in Corby and London – votes for the outright winner. Rainbow Rewards, a scheme designed by a staff member, recognises individuals or teams that have gone the extra mile.

As part of its efforts to protect staff wellbeing, the leadership team introduced a walk and talk hour. All colleagues went for a walk at a fixed time, with no screens or emails allowed, though phone calls could be made. Quizzes and a book club also helped to keep the team connected during the pandemic.

Featured Workplace Factors

My Manager

90% of staff agreed

My manager cares about me as an individual

CMI has moved away from documentation to conversation. Regular meetings have been put in place for managers and direct reports to discuss objectives, what is going well and what support is needed. All senior managers are studying for the CMI level seven coaching and mentoring qualification.

Leadership

90% of staff agreed

This organisation is run on strong values / principles

The chief executive, Ann Francke, holds weekly remote sessions with all colleagues, providing business updates, shoutouts to good performers and Q&As. Also, she has introduced “Coffee and a chat with Ann”, where five or six colleagues from across CMI get together virtually for 30 minutes.

My Company

94% of staff agreed

I feel proud to work for this organisation

Every colleague was given a wellbeing day to recognise their hard work after the pandemic started. All staff had the same day off, which meant closing the business for a day. CMI has also organised twice-weekly pilates classes, with staff taking an hour out of their working day to attend.

Quote from the top...
“I'm thrilled and delighted to receive this (Best Companies two star accreditation) Award on behalf of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). It means so much more as we still continue to navigate the devastating impacts of this pandemic and the latest lockdown. It serves as a humble reminder of how everyone at CMI walks the talk when it comes to our values, purpose and principles. Thank to all of our amazing CMI colleagues and also the community for all you do to support each other and for bringing alive what can be achieved when you lead and manage with a human face first.”

Ann Francke, CEO - Chartered Management Institute
