Half of Britain was under water last summer and so was half of Alasdair Phillips. The managing director of Munters rolled up his trousers and got stuck into clearing debris and flood damage with his team in Gloucestershire. The firm, which was founded by the Swedish inventor Carl Munters, specialises in restoration and humidity control. With the wet weather last year the company was flooded with work, so Phillips decided it was all hands to the pumps. This team spirit is evident in the company questionnaire, where staff said people in their group go out of their way to help, with a top 20 positive score of 81%. Employees feel that they can make a difference to the firm (78%) and say that the work isn't boring (74%). The company has a policy of “restore rather than replace”, which seems to extend to staff — half of the 350-strong workforce have been there for more than three years and the firm has just had a big push on training. Employees spend two days working out their training needs and the firm has created personal development plans and continues to refine the Munters Academy — an internet-based scheme that has led to 61 internal promotions. Staff say such development is of great benefit to them (71%) and give the firm a 72% score overall for questions relating to personal growth. Munters is based in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, with 11 sites around the UK. There is plenty of flexibility for staff to work from home if appropriate, with an award-winning mobile IT system for property damage restoration technicians. There are 25 days of annual holiday, plus ad hoc days off for good work, and the company offers performance- and profit-related pay, critical illness and life assurance cover and subsidised gym memberships. Under its pension scheme, the firm more than doubles the employee contribution of 3% of salary, adding 7% on average. Just under a third of employees have private healthcare and some have cover for their families. The company has introduced medical briefings to help colleagues better understand conditions such as epilepsy and diabetes, following wellbeing assessments for everyone. There is also a counselling service, covering areas such as anger management as well as personal issues such as bereavement. Being “empathetic” is one of the company values, and Munters tries to practise this. There is a buddy system for new recruits, and staff say managers regularly express appreciation for a good job done (74%) and talk to them openly and honestly (79%). They are also caring (78%), and people don't need to use intimidation to get what they want (73%). The company tries to minimise damage to the world, developing more environmentally friendly dehumidifiers which cut energy bills, recover waste heat and reduce carbon emissions.
