GOING GREENER IS a key goal for this housing association. Based in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, it joined a carbon literacy project to teach people about climate change and reduce the area's carbon footprint by 41% by 2020. Staff acknowledge that New Charter cares for the environment, scoring 77% positive, third among mid-size organisations. After a recent restructure and a reduction of the workforce from 1,035 to 894 people last year, chief executive Ian Munro is keen to ensure that staff continue to feel they can make a valuable contribution here (81%). Everybody gets a day off on their birthday and people are happy with their work/life balance (70%), thanks to flexible work patterns including staggered hours. The group sponsors four academy schools and is proud to be about “more than just housing”. New Charter has recruited 21 apprentices in the past year and is committed to attracting fresh talent through the training scheme. It also helps adults to become work-ready.
