Practices Under a reward and recognition scheme, nominations are received from managers for staff who have provided service or achieved performance above the norm. The chief executive and leader personally write to each nominee thanking them and giving them a small reward, usually a voucher. Managers and staff undertake an Improve Your Impact programme, aimed at empowering staff and ensuring that their contributions are recognised and appreciated. As part of a management development programme, managers and their immediate staff assess their teamworking abilities and practices and establish practical plans to improve teamworking. The chief executive and council leader hold regular meet-the-leaders sessions with staff at which they are invited to discuss anything about the organisation and its business. Senior managers also visit one another's teams to share information. Potential managers and leaders participate in a leadership development programme with seven other local authorities, which provides added opportunities for participants to develop their skills and to prepare for the future. A manager's tool kit contains advice and guidance on people management, personnel policies and practices, performance management and much more. The council runs fitness checks at a local gym, osteoporosis clinics and emotional freedom techniques sessions, which encourage employees to look after themselves. Pay and benefits Flexible working options include job sharing, home working, compressed and reduced hours and flexitime. Sabbaticals of up to four weeks' paid leave are available for staff with at least six months' service. Benefits include performance related pay, subsidised sports facilities, free counselling and legal help.
