The Consumer Council

Since the last survey, the council has sought to provide permanent jobs and rely less on temporary workers via agencies. This has increased the head count by almost 50% in the past 12 months. Staff away-days have also been introduced and the council is seeking to improve communication and engagement.
The Consumer Council invests heavily in learning and development for staff to promote personal and professional growth, as part of its retention strategy. It means an average of £1,500 is spent on each person, per year.
Newsletters covering topics such as health and wellbeing are sent to staff. Directorates and teams have WhatsApp groups to communicate with each other and the council also has all-staff and wider leadership team WhatsApp groups. At a monthly, remote, all-staff meeting, one of the teams gives a presentation on a project it is working on.

Rocksteady Studios

Placing a focus on employee wellbeing, Rocksteady support employees who might be struggling with different mental health resources, such as an EAP service, mental health counselling and independent counselling sessions through its privately hired counselling agency. Teams are offered free yoga four times a week and discounted gym memberships promoting physical wellbeing.
Food is a huge cultural element and Rocksteady have designed the studio to revolve around the large open plan kitchen with communal tables brining colleagues across the business together. Caterers are hired for themed events such as the Lunar New Year, and senior managers gather to cook breakfast for the whole team once a month.
The studio remains dedicated to giving something back to the community, and as such sponsored and donated to many charitable organisations throughout 2021. This charitable work includes a new partnership with GamesAid, a UK-based video games charity, where the company participated in a Go Karting event and donated to the charities Games Comedy Night.

Everyone keeps in touch through the Hub, which is fun, informative, educational, honest and fresh. It showcases Portview's culture and helps to inspire and enable people to go the extra mile and seek opportunities for continual improvement to benefit themselves, the organisation and its clients.

New Street Consulting Group

Cross-business coffee catchups, which were arranged as one-to-ones between people who would not typically engage with one another, have led to collaborations between departments on projects. As well as monthly all business updates and quarterly newsletters, the company also introduced Yammer as a way of highlighting the work of a different team each month.
The e-learning system PiiQ allows staff to access thousands of courses. The company also uses the software to upload its own training sessions and webinars so that they can be accessed at any time. During the pandemic many employees have chosen to learn a new language.
In 2021 the organisation placed a focus on their continuation to donate time and resource, rather than the usual fundraising activity. Employees were encouraged to volunteer during working hours, with one team member using their time to deliver prescriptions to elderly and high-risk members of their community.

Mindful Chef

Each quarter the company runs a Mindful Chef Champions reward programme that encourages staff to nominate colleagues whom they feel have best displayed one or more of the three values — mindful, personal and unafraid. Prizes vary, but the most recent was a meal for two at a fine-dining restaurant.
The company launched its first management training programme, using an external consultant. It consisted of three 90-minute interactive workshops for managers at all levels of the company.
Staff survey results revealed a gap when it came to team building. As a result Mindful Chef ran a range of events in the office, such as cooking masterclasses, speed dating and games nights, all of which have gone down well with staff.
