Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (SATCoL), the trading arm of The Salvation Army, has firmly established itself at the forefront of reuse and recycling, helping both people and the planet. Since its inception in 1991, SATCoL has been dedicated to positively impacting society and the environment through innovative initiatives and a commitment to sustainability.
During 2023-24, SATCoL demonstrated its commitment by raising over £11.2 million for The Salvation Army and £4.1 million for partner charities. The organisation’s efforts extend beyond financial contributions; it has opened 10 new donation centres and refurbished nine charity shops, serving approximately 6 million customers and providing affordable, quality products.
SATCoL's pioneering spirit is evident in its technological advancements. The FibersortTM technology, installed at its Kettering processing centre, automatically sorts garments by fibre type, processing over 500,000 items last year alone. Its collaboration with Project Plan B led to the creation of Project Re:claimTM, the world’s first commercial-scale textile polyester recycling technology, promising a sustainable future for textile recycling.
The organisation's commitment to community support is unwavering. It has issued thousands of free clothing vouchers, with 5,195 redeemed last year, representing a 76% increase. Its Flooring Reuse and GiveITBack initiatives have garnered widespread praise for their innovative approaches to reuse.
SATCoL's dedication to reducing emissions and promoting reuse is exemplified by its collection of 67,000 tonnes of clothing, contributing to 453,000 tonnes of avoided emissions. As a founder member of TRUST, SATCoL is a leader in setting and maintaining high standards in textile reuse and recycling.
