The Society for Endocrinology brings together the global endocrine community to share ideas and advance the discipline. As a membership organisation, it supports scientists, clinicians and nurses who work with hormones throughout their careers.
The UK-based organisation aims to improve public health by developing endocrine education and research, and engaging wider audiences with the science of hormones. It also communicates with policy-makers, journalists, patients and the public about hormone science to encourage informed health decisions and to demonstrate the value of endocrinology to the wider world.
The society's trading subsidiary, Bioscientifica collaborates with learned societies worldwide to provide bespoke world-class publishing and association management to the biomedical community. Profits from Bioscientifica are redistributed to the society to enable it to work towards its vision of becoming a world-leading authority on hormones.
The not-for-profit organisation was established in 1946 and has grown from a handful of academics to a staff of 80 people. It is a great place to work because it takes into account the individual. Feedback and internal communication is key to the society and the way it works. It aims to adapt as much as possible its work environment and to be as flexible as possible.
This organisation is run on strong values / principles
The executive team's internal communication has been the society's strength during the pandemic. Leaders have communicated openly, honestly and on a timely basis, anticipating staff concerns before they were raised, which has been greatly appreciated by staff.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
As a result of the last annual survey among staff, the society has placed more emphasis on learning and development, put mechanisms in place to listen better to first line managers and shared and talked about plans for the future.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
Lunch breaks have been extended to encourage staff to exercise. Managers place a priority on mental health, for which they have received training. Mental health first aiders have created an area on the intranet offering support and tips.
