'When we move forward, so does Greater Manchester.' This is one of the guiding principles of Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) – the local government body responsible for delivering the region's transport strategy and commitments.
More than 5.6 million journeys are made across Greater Manchester's transport network every day. The organisation's team of more than 1000 employees works to better connect people and places, supporting the City Region's growth, all while making getting from A to B as safe and simple as possible.
An organisation at the heart of Greater Manchester's economic growth and development, TfGM wanted to optimise its purpose, practices and people through its 'Future Ready' programme. A core element was developing a fresh purpose statement and values, ensuring they were employee-led to make them meaningful and relatable.
And it takes the same approach to objective setting. The 'My Impact' personal development review process gets staff to develop individual objectives which link back to TfGM's goals and priorities so they can clearly see their role in helping the organisation succeed.
The transport body uses in-house social networking service Yammer to strengthen connections, encouraging work-related conversations and helping to replicate those more informal 'water cooler' moments.
And to help them bring their best selves to work, employees get a half day off per month for fitness-related or other self-care activities.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
Employees are encouraged to be their 'authentic selves' in the workplace through the 'Whole Self' initiative. It includes encouraging colleagues to share their experience of menopause and reach out for support. A new menopause toolkit and webinars are increasing knowledge and awareness of the subject organisation-wide.
I am happy with the pay and benefits I receive in this job
Employees are encouraged to recognise each others' efforts and show appreciation through the 'Going the Extra Mile' scheme. All nominated staff get an instant recognition email. And a quarterly peer review panel decides on those deserving of an award, considering whether they've demonstrated the values and gone above and beyond regular duties.
I believe I can make a valuable contribution to the success of this organisation
There are opportunities for all at Transport for Greater Manchester. It offers all-level apprenticeships in areas from leadership and management to civil engineering. There's a talent management strategy to support the development of high-potential employees, and a number of trainees under the government's Kickstart scheme are now in permanent roles.
