Every employee is both a learner and a teacher, according to the games developer Sumo Group, whether they have been in the industry 25 days or 25 years. Learning from each other in a welcoming and passionate workplace is key to Sumo's vision: achieve wonder together.

Lockdown saw the entire UK workforce of 1,000 people working from home, supported not only by extra equipment such as webcams for face-to-face communication but by physiotherapy and mental health advice provided by an employee assistance programme. Just weeks into the first UK lockdown, Sumo launched its social learning platform, Dojo, to connect employees across its network of game development studios.

Contributing to successful franchises such as Minecraft, Mortal Kombat and Sonic the Hedgehog, the group has nine game development studios in the UK and India. Sumo also runs Atomhawk, providing concept art services from Newcastle and Vancouver, and the American studio Pipeworks in Oregon.

Dojo offered the scattered workforce bitesize workshops, a chat show format for business updates and social events to bring people together for quizzes, virtual coffee and pub breaks, yoga and games of Dungeons and Dragons. Over the past year, Sumo has given out its biggest number of financial spot bonuses yet. Staff have also received regular feelgood packages of team, studio and company-themed clothing and merchandise, games, electronic goods, food and drink in the mail – and those rewards will keep coming, post-pandemic, to recognise hard work and enthusiasm.

Featured Workplace Factors

My Manager

88% of staff agreed

I feel that my manager talks openly and honestly with me

In the first month of lockdown, managers were trained by a therapist to help their teams to get through the crisis. Flexibility was vital for people juggling the challenge of working from home so core hours and time recording were suspended and leaders concentrated on good communication, offering reassurance and appreciation.

Personal Growth

90% of staff agreed

The experience I gain from this job is valuable for my future

Sumo offered more training in 2020 than ever before. Apprenticeships continued remotely and Sumo has introduced five paid learning days each year for personal development in addition to job training. The Sumo Academy recruits students from diverse backgrounds who have a flair for game development but may lack traditional qualifications.

Giving Something Back

88% of staff agreed

My organisation encourages charitable activities

All the Sumo studios have supported local causes to help to address charity funding shortfalls due to the coronavirus pandemic. Staff at Sumo's Nottingham base donated money to a scheme providing free taxis for NHS staff, while surplus office refreshment stocks were given to a food bank in Sheffield.
