"Everyone makes the tea at VetPartners" sums up the ethos of the York-based veterinary business.
CEO Jo Malone was disappointed by her experience working in a larger group, so she set up her own – one built on respect, collaboration and mutual support. "No colleague of ours is 'staff' or a payroll number", says Jo.
The company, which started with several small animal practices in 2015, quickly expanded into farm and equine care and now includes other businesses across the UK, such as veterinary nursing schools and hospitals, pet crematoriums and a research dairy. It also has five practices in Italy with plans to expand further into Europe.
The business may be growing quickly, but the group's motto, "we are a family", still holds strong. Jo Malone has fostered a culture of warmth and belonging where pets and their owners feel cared for, and her colleagues – a team of almost 7000 people – have opportunities to grow and develop. This includes high-quality training and ensuring clinics have the latest technology and equipment.
And with a shortage of vets in the industry, VetPartners is keen to be the employer of choice. As more than eight in 10 vets are female, it's working hard to encourage mums back to work through flexible working, job shares and a five per cent return to work bonus.
I am happy with the balance between my work and home life
VetPartners recognises the importance of wellness and work-life balance. The company has a wellbeing group, and 160 leaders have undergone mental health champions training. Colleagues are gifted a volunteering day every year and can purchase up to two weeks of additional leave. Veterinary surgeons are also trialling a four-day week across several practices.
This job is good for my own personal growth
All practice and support centre colleagues get an annual allowance to progress their clinical or educational learning. Vets can attend the London Vet Show every year, and nurses, the BVNA congress. The company also pays all RCVS fees. And to boost clinical excellence credentials, colleagues are encouraged to apply to a new £100,000 research fund.
This organisation has a strong social conscience
All practice PPE is recycled, so far saving more than nine tonnes from ending up in landfill. Over 200 sites are on zero carbon electricity accounts, and more than 20 practices are signed up to Investors in the Environment. The company also has a sustainability team that's produced a bespoke guide for colleagues.
