With a shortage of vets in the industry, VetPartners aims to be the employer of choice. Its strategy is to encourage working mothers to return by offering flexible working and 5% of their annual salary when they come back.

It also fosters a culture of warmth and belonging among staff, which was encouraged by the founder and chief executive, Jo Malone, when she set up the first three practices in 2015.

Her previous experience of being part of a large group was not positive, so she decided to establish one that would reflect her values. They are being respectful, working in collaboration, supporting each other and being dedicated and approachable. The group’s motto, "we are family", sums up the close working relationships at VetPartners.

Among the first practices was Minster Vets, in York, where Malone was a director and vet. The group expanded rapidly from small animal practices to include equine, mixed and farm ones. It also diversified to included other businesses, including a veterinary nursing school, laboratories, a research dairy, a locum agency and pet crematoriums.

In 2019, iVetPartners took on five practices in Italy and is extending its reach to other parts of Europe. It has invested in new practices and veterinary hospitals, including Farnham Veterinary Hospital, in Surrey, Woodcroft Veterinary Hospital, in Cheadle Heath, Cheshire, and Valley Veterinary Hospital, in Cardiff.

The group is also investing in new equipment for practices, including MRI and CT scanners and digital X-ray machines.
